I've used a variety of accounting software over the years, and I'm revisting this again. Ive used estimate for many years but got annoyed with the bugs using win7Ultimate so went back to quickbooks.

I've been approached by Xero and it is very impressive - 24/7 free support and upgrades. A change for the $800 a year for quickbooks. Anyone using it? good or bad points?

Try MYOB, they have different modules for different sized business. I use Business Basic - or Account Right as it now called. It's their basic module and does not include any pay roll, so ideal for the one man show. Easy to operate, costs about $200.00 and no more to pay. Easy to upgrade when the business groes.

Thanks for that. MYOB is not as flexible as Xero, plus it costs no extra to have tablet and phone access to create quotes and invoices on the fly. Thanks for the comment

We're also using Xero ( www.xero.com.au ) .. very easy to customise and being cloud based, can be accessed wherever you are (that has internet availability) with a valid userid / password. We do all of our accounting through Xero and have found no further need for a book keeper.
I would recommend an initial set up using Xero familiar accountant (what we call a 'Xero Hero' ) to set it up for your particular business model. We lost ours when she moved from Perth to Melbourne, but we are managing very well considering that she can still assist on-line if required..

Xero - have been using it for 2 years, it goes up and the rules are changed from time to time. Not sure about the 24/7 support, doesn't appear that way. It's very slow occasionally especially lately.
Quotes are cumbersome and don't allow for options ie variations 1 or 2 etc ( have to do multiple quotes)
A lot of it is simple, I was really keen because of the bank feeds but now my cc company won't allow the scraping (yoodle I think) because of security
