Few realise that Printing, Packaging, Converting and Signage is one of the largest remaining manufacturing industries in Australia! Print is so intertwined with other manufacturing processes such as branding of giftware, textiles & fashion, premium promotional products,, trophies, tags, solar panels and so forth, that it is difficult to gauge it's enirety, but best research sources (e.g. IBISworld) put it at around AUD$6.7 billion in 2024 revenue. Add to this packaging, invariably printed, at around $3.6 billion, manufactured signage at about the same and related interior/exterior fit-outs of shops and offices which often involve transforming ACP (Aluminium Composite Panels), applying decorative window films etc. and CAD/AEC this adds around $4 billion.
Pulp, paper and board converting and recycling by the likes of Visy, CHH and Amcor tends to cross-over between printing, forestry and packaging, but these players are nonetheless considered part of our broader industry. Australia's larget printing and marketing services company, the listed IVE, is on track to nudge AUD$1 billion in FY 2024-25.
Automotive, marine and aviation wrapping can be either printed or as a monocolour paint replacement colour, but the work is invariably performed by signage companies and is a dynamic sector, growing with a CAGR estimated at 19.4% per annum, globally. Only global data is available for this (Alliedmarketresearch), but with a 2024 estimate of USD$7.1 billion (growing to USD$40 billion by 2033) - it would suggest an Australian market value approaching half a billion dollars.
Add all this up and it would appear to be an addressable market of around AUD$15-$18 billion and, as industrial firms increase their use of inkjet printing in particular - solar tiles and panels, for instance - it could be higher.
Multicam will show that even quality CNC machines can be made in Australia, stand H48 at PacPrint
Machinery & software made in Australia
It goes without saying that the majority of machinery used for manufactured print on the floor of PacPrint, will be imported, but a big shout-out must go to Multicam (stand H48) and Trimatt (stand F58) for their ingenuity in manufacturing equipment in Australia. Excellent software such as Serendipity's BlackMagic (on Fujifilm stand), M-Power and Print IQ is also written in ANZ and on show!
So let's join Ariarne Titmus and 'Australian Made' in celebrating our greater-than-we-think manufacturing industry at Sydney Olympic Park Showground between May 20th and 23rd, at PacPrint!
