Penrith Museum of Printing has firmed up on its own special 2-hour speaker event, being staged 1.30-3.30pm on Tuesday 21st October.
Left to Right, the 3 speakers locked in for the Penrith Museum of Printing, Sydney Rare Book Week showcase event are Bob Lockley, Jean Kropper and Andy McCourt.
As the Sydney Rare Book Week rolls into town - from 19th-25th October at venues across Sydney - bringing with it a program of free talks, workshops and tours that celebrate the importance of books, publishing, book production and collecting; Penrith Museum of Printing has firmed up on its own special 2-hour speaker event, being staged 1.30-3.30pm on Tuesday 21st October.
Three speakers have now been confirmed for this session:
- Jean Kropper, talking about ‘The Curious Evolution of Book Structures’
Jean is an expert on paper engineering and bookbinding and runs ‘Paper & Pixel’ design studio. She is an internationally published author of three books including: Handmade Books and Cards, with Davis Publications and a volunteer at the Print Museum.
- Andy McCourt, speaking about ‘Typography from Gutenberg to Google’
A former editor of this WideFormatOnline newsletter and a recognised print industry expert, Andy spoke at the 2023 Sydney Rare Book Week event, on Shakespeare and the Gutenberg 42-line Bible. This year he will cover the evolution of typefaces, from pre-Gutenberg to Google, MS, Adobe etc. including some surprises about Australian-made type founts.
- Bob Lockley, offering insights into ‘The Linotype: eighth Wonder of the World’
Penrith Museum of Print’s President and former Fairfax/Rural Press CEO of Print & Distribution, Bob will reference the Museum’s early 20th century Linotype and Intertype machines and how they revolutionised newspaper and book production.
With no cost of entry for this impressive line-up of speakers (albeit donations to the Penrih Museum of Printing are always welcomed), the opportunity presents as a wholesome aperitif to the main event of the 2025 Sydney Rare Book Week: the renowned Rare Book Fair on 23rd to 25th October 2025, which takes place in the Glasshouse at the State Library of New South Wales.
The only downside is that space at the Museum is at a premium, so attendee numbers are limited and booking is essential: directly by email to the Museum’s President, Bob Lockley ralockley07@gmail.com
